Sunday Stealing: The Dating Profiles Meme

All the trees are naked and it is very close to freezing at night now. Thanksgiving is just right around the corner and we aren’t really sure where the year has gone. Life is blowing by so fast and it just feels like we are standing here in a blur while it all swirls around us [...]

Today we are proud home owners!

Well, we’ve done it! Several years of planning and thousands of dollars later… We are now the proud owners of our own home! N was bummed that we had no “sold” sign to pose with out on the front lawn though… We may just have to stage it anyway, kind of like this: We went in [...]

Today we are proud home owners!

This will be the first weekend in probably a month or so that we’ll have to relax and get caught up on things. Marching season has come and gone, my 9th marching season is now over. Sure winterguard plans and ideas are in the works but it wont be until January when the performance madness picks [...]

Sigh… Rest and recuperation are in order.

To my baby girl at 20 weeks

Dear Sweet Everly, You are now 20 weeks old/ 5 months today. Where has the time gone? It seems like just yesterday I was holding you for the first time. When we first brought you home from The Farm it felt like time was going so slow as we learned your needs and got used to being [...]

To my baby girl at 20 weeks

Before becoming a parent I really had no idea just how busy things could get. Sure back in my pre-parenthood days it felt busy and hectic but in comparison to how it is now I really had it easy back then. Now things truly are insanely busy and I could probably benefit from some crack, ADD [...]

Super, crazy- busy is an understatement!

The appraiser came today to inspect the house and underwriting has sent out our paperwork. Only two more weeks until we plan to close on the house! We are so happy and are starting a list of things we want to do once the house is ours, things like painting the nursery and all that [...]

Family Photo Fail- Take 2

The universe does not want us to have family photos taken! Once again we woke up early and got ourselves ready for photo day. Once we were good to go we woke Everly and got her all dolled up too. By 9:30am we were on our way downtown for our appointment. It’s a cool (we are [...]

Family Photo Fail- Take 2

Last year was the 87th annual but I was all preggo and feeling like I would vomit so the sound of things like “Brain Sandwiches” just didn’t get me salivating so we skipped it. (I tweeted the photos, click on the images to see a larger view) You see back in Arizona things like 4 block [...]

One lovely blog award and Everly rolls

I was just tagged over at Auguries of Innocence as a recipient of this award and wanted to pass it along to several of the bloggers I’ve discovered via twitter. I don’t always manage to comment on the blogs I read but I am reading and making the rounds I am just lurking. The rules of [...]

Family photo day- FAIL!

Well, the plan for this morning was simple… (note the emphasized use of the word plan.) The alarm was set for 7am because we had a photo session booked with a local photographer. N got a ride home from his coworker so E and I could rest and have an early bedtime in preparation. 2am-ish: E wakes [...]

Family photo day- FAIL!

Over the weekend we spent the night at another crappy hotel following the band/ colorguard’s performance at Louisville Bands of America. The group finished 7th out of 10 bands in class 3A and 15th overall out of 26 bands. They made much improvement and did great! We took E along and everyone commented on her throughout [...]

Pondering birthdays and recovering from a weekend away

Well, it is official! Everly is NOT a happy camper about this tooth thing. It’s a whole different kind of fussy, irritable baby these days. Luckily she’s still comforted by and willing to breastfeed, despite the mouth pain. I am just glad something is still able to soothe her, almost everything we try fails to comfort [...]

Breastfeeding and teething fun at 3 months old

On Monday we had Everly’s 3 month checkup and learned just how advanced she really is. Here is an update: First, she’s still gaining weight like a champ. Exclusive breastfeeding is doing her just fine! She’s 12.4 pounds now, both her head and overall length have increased by an inch too! She’s outgrown the 0-3 month [...]

Not so wordless wednesday: Everly is 13 weeks old!

The joys of football season are endless… Not because I love football or anything. It means four straight months of teaching, reworking and cleaning a marching band show. Rehearsals and performances galore, fun (insanely busy) times! I actually hate football with a passion but marching bands perform during halftime at football games so that means I [...]

Ah, the insanity of football season and being a mommy.

There is more to life than winning or loosing… Right?

Sure there is always the draw of winning, as a teacher of the competitive arts I know this all too well. Winning feels great and is fun right? Sure Does!

However, I’ve always totally believed that winning was only to be a bonus for my students, not the driving force behind their efforts. I know many more competitive people that do not agree with this theory.

I’ve had many students who were not the cream of the crop competitively speaking, that was okay with me though. I saw my chance to help them believe in themselves and to show them that hard work can help them achieve anything.

Often times this meant training, nurturing, building them up, guiding them and then pushing them to their limit. If you’ve got a good relationships with someone they trust your intentions and work harder for you.

Not everyone is born as talented at some things as others but that doesn’t mean you can’t try it, feel good about it and succeed.

I’ve noticed that so many kids these days are afraid to fail. So afraid that they are often too scared to even try new things.

Personally, if I never tried new things I wouldn’t be where I am today. I wouldn’t be a dancer, a teacher, a writer, a mother or a wife… Those were all things I was new to that I could have potentially failed at.

It’s not about winning or loosing to me (or succeeding vs. failing) it’s about taking chances, working hard, loving and believing in yourself and others while they grow.

For me it’s more about how you play the game as opposed to weather or not you win.

I value effort, determination, work ethic, team work and the development of good character qualities over winning at all costs. That is just how I choose to see and approach life. Is that so crazy? Does that automatically make me destined to lose and always the underdog?

I mean if your kids were in a competitive situation wouldn’t you value the things they could learn about life through the activity versus whether or not they were always winners?

I”m a firm believer in having fun in what you do. It shouldn’t matter if you win or come in last. As long as you try your best, that is what matters. My brother is a believer in the “2nd place is the first loser” philosophy. This is the reason that neither of his kids are willing to try anything.

I like to do things for me. And that’s how I’m raising my kids. It doesn’t matter how many trophies or blue ribbons are earned, its about the fun and doing your best.

Yes, I do believe that the learning is more important than the winning… learning about life and believing in yourself

I was always competitive when it came to Art because that’s what I was good at. Now I’m halfway to being an Art Teacher. Sometimes it made me mad that the other kids wouldnt even try to compete with me, and would be nasty to me because I was good at drawing.

I think learning to win and to lose is important in life. I try to teach that to my own children.

I’m sure I’ve mentioned my youngest daughter who loved ballet before. She knew early on that she didn’t have to body to become a professional, but she also knew that she had the talent to dance well and to lead and teach others.

Her first paid job was teaching 4 year olds and she loved that beyond description. While she knew that she would never dance the role of Clara in the Nutcracker, she dutifully did the tryouts for 2 years. Her 3rd tryout succeeded… not in getting the role of Clara, but in being made the youngest member of the Senior Co.

So, in some ways she was never a winner… but without her and others like her over the years, the productions would have failed. Not the star perhaps, but damn good and one the star could depend on.
