The Rules of Inheritance: A Book Review

I just finished reading the book The Rules of Inheritance this week as a part of BlogHer Book Club and wanted to share it with you.

It’s written by a fellow blogger, Claire Bidwell Smith, which is what initially got me interested in the book. It’s always cool to see bloggers getting published and I wanted to support her in her efforts.

It is a book based on reality, her reality. It chronicles her experiences in losing both her parents to cancer. Not only is it telling a story but it also really touches on the various stages of grief that people often experience.

Anyone who’s lost somebody will be able to relate to the book as it vividly illustrates how lonely grief can be. Actually, even if you’ve never lost anyone or experienced grief for yourself you’ll likely enjoy the book because it gives such insight into the grieving mind.

One thing that stuck out for me was how Claire kept encountering people who felt like they had to say or do something in order to make her feel better about her loss. This struck a chord with me because I’ve done the same thing to grieving people without realizing it invalidates their grief.

This book explores how it is extremely uncomfortable to be around someone who is suffering and cannot be helped but it points out, most grieving people just want to be heard and have their grief acknowledged.

I actually think I know someone right now who needs grief validation and who would really enjoy this book. Whether you’ve lost someone or not, I highly recommend reading this book. The insight is invaluable and if you are grieving it could even be quite freeing.

This is a paid review for BlogHer Book Club but the opinions expressed are my own.
