I wonder if you could ask somebody at the zoo or the city chamber of commerce how they keep the tropical plants alive. Or maybe this winter you'll drive by these businesses and there will be empty spots where those plants used to be--because they're repotted and indoors for the winter! They are far enough north that they have only 6 - 7 hours daylight in the winter. Her helpful answer was she had no clue! The plants were there when they bought the place and they had done nothing except trim a few back in the 3 years they'd lived there. If you find the answer to that, let us know!
