The 88th Annual WSNC Fall Festival eats and photos…

Last year was the 87th annual but I was all preggo and feeling like I would vomit so the sound of things like “Brain Sandwiches” just didn’t get me salivating so we skipped it. (I tweeted the photos, click on the images to see a larger view)

You see back in Arizona things like 4 block fried food festivals just don’t happen. Especially with menu items like Brain Sandwiches, Elephant Toes, Pickle Juice Icees and Trash Dog…

This year we visited the festival as a family with camera in hand. It was a cold wet day but we didn’t let that stop us! We bundled little Everly up withdrew some cash and were on our way.

Greasy fried food isn’t my thing. I blame it on my aversion to fried food smell thanks to my chicken fat grandma’s house that we were staying at when I was a kid. Since then the smell of fried foods (like at the fair and stuff) make me want to puke.

Anyway, the newspaper published this menu/ booth map so we had a few places mapped out to try. I was going to be open minded and try a bit of whatever looked good.

I was set out to score me a caramel apple and that was pretty much it. N was set on getting some greasier things.

First we tried the Fried Green Beans out. they were served with ranch dipping sauce and I really love them! N had tried them before and already knew he liked them. So we munched them up and plotted our next stop.

The next item was a Pronto Pup. These are basically hot dogs, corn dog style but in pancake batter… they came with ketchup and were okay in my book. N really like them but I thought the batter was a bit sweet to be combined with a hot dog and ketchup. Maybe if dipped in honey they would be tastier!

N spotted a booth selling Kuchen and said we needed to get one for tomorrow’s breakfast. It was basically a German coffeecake type ting that came in a variety of flavors like apple, cherry, cinnamon etc. It was very good!

The last few stops were for unexciting favorites like Funnel Cake and Caramel Apples. I was particularly disappointed with my Caramel apple though.

After I got all the plastic and paper off the apple there was no caramel left on it! Whom ever decided how to wrap and serve the apples wasn’t thinking of those people who would have to consume them :-(

All in all it was a nice little lunch outing for us and I am glad we went. Wasn’t brave enough to try those weird things, maybe next year!

maiden53: I'm not actually sure what the elephant toes turned out to be. The West Side Nut Club's Fall Festival is an interesting culinary adventure of some of the weirdest and most obscure food items. You can get things like BBQ alligator jerky, burgoo, stuffed pepper soup and quakwurst (yes, that's sausage made with duck). Then there are the booths that think of weird exotic dishes to counteract all of those ones like Elephent Toes, Elephant Ears, Pigs in the Mud and Puppy Chow. Puppy Chow happens to be a Chex Mix-like snack mixture. Pigs in the Mud, were strips of bacon baked into a small chocolate cake and drizzled with some type of chocolate or caramel sauce. Pig Lickers are another great one. Those are pieces of bacon dipped in chocolate.

I like a little bit of adventure but will stick to the more mainstream items like Pronto Pups, Fried Green Beans and maybe a fried Oreo or two ;-)
.-= N´s last blog ..Enjoying the Apple Harvest =-.

did you or N try the Elelphant Toes? what is it anyway?

How fun! We didn't hit the fall festival this year but I really enjoy reading about everyone's culinary adventures. Thanks for sharing.
