She’s self soothing!! Woot.

A few hours ago while I was feeding E she was making these whining sounds. I thought to my self  “Is she talking in her sleep?”.

I sing her a bedtime song and I thought her sounds were her talking and trying to sing with me then I noticed she whimpers and makes sounds while she’s feeding.

She seems to do the whine/ mumble only when she’s on her way to sleep and it’s always when she’s sucking… Usually.

Then it hit me, she’s self soothing! Someone said that is what it seemed like, I agree. Here have a listen:

So if you are wondering what self soothing is like now you know. Remarkably she’s just taught herself to do it. She sucks her thumb, caresses something nearby and makes her sounds as she nods off. Fabulous!

If you are wondering how to get your baby to self soothe here’s what experts say:

  • you need a regular bedtime and a consistent routine
  • you need to put your baby to bed drowsy but awake (don’t rock or nurse them to sleep)
  • don’t let baby become overtired, usually overtired babies can’t self soothe.

You do realize that the security you give her allows her to be sefl-soothing. Yes, she's taught herself, but only because she had the opportunity to do so. You guys are wonderful parents.

I'm learning so much from you about pregnancy and babies! My best friend is due February 19th and both of us are pretty panicked. But I get to tell her about stuff like the mucus plug (remember how much that freaked me out?) because of you!
