I have a few of my MIL's grandmother's recipes and I know exactly what you mean about being vague. I guess cooking and baking was so ingrained in them that they knew things had to be done a certain way! Now I try to cross reference with an internet recipe. My MIL makes a special cake with lady fingers (can't remember the name of it) and sometimes she has to special order the lady fingers at the grocery store months in advance. Tiramisu is one of the best things in the world! I don’t know why I don’t make it occasionally, as I have seen ladyfingers in my local grocery store.

Ok so I must cheat when I make Tiramisu? It’s Chris’ Fav dessert also!
Instead of using lady fingers I buy store made Angle food cake (the kind in a loaf not the circle ones).
Then I cut them in 1inch slices and dab on some rum.
Its not quite the same but it does the trick with out all the baking!
Next time your in town Ill make N some and he can judge that as well!
