Rounding up the stuff for our RV trip…

August 7th, 2008

There are only a few weeks left before we load the RV with our animals, ourselves and begin our trek across 6 states! These days we have been getting in our travel preparation mind set.

We’re thinking about what we’ll need to have in the RV during the trip, what we won’t want to have in the RV and what we’ll need to get for the RV. My mom is especially excited about browsing the “fun RV accessories” in stores. She is looking for fun cup holders, blankets and other organizational things we can get to make our trip more comfortable and enjoyable.

FabGrandma (my RV expert blog buddy) warned us of the insane costs of items marketed “for the RV” and instead advised that we just look at regular products that will work for the RV as opposed to specifically marketed RV products. This advice actually helped me find the Cabin Cuddler online.

Cabin_cuddler

It’s not specifically marketed for RV travel, actually it is marketed for Airline travel but I am getting us some for the RV anyway!

I know, you are dying to know why… Well, you see my mom and I both have leg circulation issues, we get really cold after sitting for extended amounts of time so we use blankets and layers of clothing to keep us toasty when we are sitting idle.

Now the last thing I want is bulky sleeping bags strewn about the RV taking up space while we’re on the road but the reality is we are going to be cold from sitting still so long.

If we have sleeping bags out during our driving hours the dog will have nowhere to walk, I’ll probably trip and split my head open and a cat could even pee of the excess sleeping bag that will be overflowing from the seats and that would NOT be a good thing my friends!

I want to avoid the madness of sleeping bag excess but we’re just going to need blankets while were are on the road, that is the bottom line. So when I found the Cabin Cuddler I was very happy about the lightweight, compact design.

Then I also learned about the nifty little “foot pocket” that keeps your feet cozy and the inflatable pillow, I was sold on the idea. Plus when you are done with it all you have to do is un-inflate the pillow and fold the blanket up, both fit in a convenient little nylon carry tote. Pretty nifty huh?

These are going to take up way less space in the RV and my mom and brother will even be able to use them on the plane when they fly home. This is a fun product idea I know my mom will like!

After discovering this product online I just knew I had to have one but wouldn’t it also be cool to have them sponsor the post I was already going to write about my nifty product find? So, I wrote them and begged them to sponsor my post and what do ya know… They did!

My neighbor Fred and Alzheimer’s

August 6th, 2008

Over the weekend while we were working on our RV the next door neighbor came by, he is an older gentleman who only lives next door to us during the summer. They live down in the valley the rest of the year. This particular gentleman, Fred, was a key player in the development of this particular neighborhood we live in, you see he was the first person to buy land out here and put homes on it.

During our yard sale weekend we got the hear about how a real estate big-wig promised Fred all this stuff when he agreed to buy his land. Plumbing/ sewage was supposed to be installed shortly after he bought his land, that was the agreement so Fred sat tight and waited.

After 2 years there still was no plumbing or sewer line but this particular real estate big-wig was still trying to sell off the land in this area to people. He was throwing a big BBQ and trying to sell buyers on the area, some port-a-johns were being delivered for the BBQ and the party was starting to come together.

When Fred got word of this he was set on making a statement. Didn’t he matter? He had already bought land from the real estate big-wig and nobody was making good on the promises made. A person should not have to live without plumbing and sewage when it was promised in the details of the sale.

Fred marched down to the big BBQ bash to discuss his grievances right when the port-a-johns were being dropped off. Nobody was around and they asked Fred where to leave the port-a-johns. This was Fred’s chance to make a statement! So he had one of them dropped off right outside his house, he didn’t have his plumbing or sewage yet so this would just have to do right?

We got a kick out of the stories Fred has shared with us. Older people have so many tales and life experiences to share with us. I mean we have a person who lived through some significant times in history living right next door to us, their experience and memories are priceless.

Sadly Fred’s wife is suffering from Alzheimer’s, all those priceless memories and experiences are just disappearing from the mind and she had no control over it. Alzheimer’s is such a heartbreaking disease that we still know too little about and it impacts so many! Did you know:

  • Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging - it’s a progressive and fatal disease.
  • Alzheimer’s is the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S.
  • Every 71 seconds, someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s is most commonly known for it’s impacts on the memory. After the memory is impacted sufferers also experience a “gradual erosion of judgment, reasoning ability, verbal fluency and other cognitive skills”.

It is not right for our elderly to slowly loose their memories and other skills to a mysterious disease that ultimately leads to death. It is important to care for them and to find answers by research Alzheimer’s and finding ways to prevent it.

The Alzheimer’s Memory Walk does just that! It raises money for research on the topic and it is something everyone should consider taking part in!

“The Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk® is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research! By teaming up with the Alzheimer’s Association, you can walk with a purpose – and move us closer to a world without Alzheimer’s. Together, we can MOVE a nation.”

Consider participating in the memory walk in your community or you can simply participate in a virtual walk instead. The whole point is to raise awareness and money to care for Alzheimer’s sufferers and to find ways to prevent and cure it. Can you imagine what our world would be like if we had to go without the priceless experiences and memories of people like Fred?  “Together, we can MOVE a nation” and we must!

I am home, woho!

June 1st, 2008

Last night we got back to town at 1am. Our time on the party bus officially had ended! It was an interesting time. The party bus was so cool but not conductive to an 8 hour drive, things were a bit tight and uncomfortable but it made for some great memories. We had a great driver, Kevin, who took very good care of us despite the fact that one of our students hit the “dump” button instead of the “flush” button in the bus bathroom.

Our transportation was provided by InTheSceneLimousine, an Arizona Based transportation company for those of you who are wondering. We had a very positive experience with them on this trip, besides aren’t the vehicles awesome looking?

The kids played movies on the bus, guitar hero, they could hook up their IPODS and play music, there were outlets under the seats so you could use your computer, charge your camera and so on.

The entertainment was endless but I have to say the most entertaining thing for a group of kids was a deck of cards. They played BS for hours and hours!

The most memorable time while at Disneyland was being run over by the stroller mob while trying to exit the park Friday night. We were wearing flip flops and I was ran over several times by strollers, those moms just mow you down!

The students got to play on stage in Disneyland on Saturday, that is always a super cool experience for music students and all our kids were well behaved on the trip. It was a good time and I am glad I went, I am beat now but I have today to recuperate!

I’ll share more pictures later, but for now I need to shower and drive down to phoenix to pick N up and bring him (and Dixie) home! Oh, gas is $3.99 a gallon now, before we left for the trip it was $3.89… It has increased $1.50 in the last two months, it is sickening.

Oh, Keep your fingers crossed for us, we are expecting to hear back about N’s job interview next week!

Some fun TriScents contest entries

May 13th, 2008

I just spent some time viewing the contest entries for the Renuzit TriScents “Transform Your Home with Tanya Memme” Promotion, the winner with the most votes will receive a $20,000 home makeover with Tayna Memme!

I talked about how you could enter in a previous blog post and I wanted to take a look and see who all entered (to see if I recognized any people) and what the entries looked like. You can view the semi-finalist gallery like I did and pick your favorite entry today. The contest allows viewers to place one vote per day through June 7, then the winner will be selected.

I had a hard time deciding which entry to vote for. The first video I saw was narrated by a 3 year old. She read

this witty poem about how her family needs to win the contest. she explains how her parents just had triplets and the diapers are smelly, her parents are busy, they have no money and the house needs help . The poem is super cute as is the narration and the idea behind the video.

The next video I saw was about this teen boy and his smelly room. I enjoyed the musical selections in this video and the creative way the video was shot. It was another very creative entry. Take a look at it the videos and cast your vote if you get a chance. Good luck to all the semi-finalist!

What? Mothers Day is THIS weekend?

May 7th, 2008

If you just realized that mothers day is this weekend chances are you don’t have a gift for mom. If that is the case don’t fret! You can still show up at her home with a thoughtful card and take her out. I am going to make soap with my mom and garden this mothers day, you know quality mother/ daughter time!

If you don’t live near ma anymore or simply don’t have the time to visit her consider sending a thoughtful gesture to her that shows you care. Send flowers!

Every woman loves flowers, you can send cut ones or live ones depending on what your mother likes best. I personally would prefer live ones but I am not a mom, yet. For the widest variety and delivery options consider 1800 flowers for your last minute mothers day flowers needs. I have personally received flowers from them (once for my birthday) and they were perfect and such a sweet surprise.
