It’s a stormy weekend day, perfect lazy weather!

March 16th, 2008

Today is a lazy day! I am crampy, achy and beat again and it is snowing so I started the laundry, folded a dry load and now am sitting in my bed writing this post. I can see the snow falling from where I sit and it’s so warm and toasty here.

My students did well yesterday. They got 7th place (out of 11) which is great considering they are all newbies except for one! They have much work to do (as do I) to get the show looking better for the next competition in 2 weeks. They did a great job though, we have 5 more weeks to work on and perfect the show be fore championships.

Tomorrow marks the start of spring break for our schools so I will have a low key first part of the week and I will try doing something interesting for my birthday towards the end of the week. I still have no plans or ideas about what I might like to do, is that bad?

Oh, I did get some new information today about my body temperature chart and my period. I joined this group called NFP-FAM over on yahoo groups and fellow members have give me their opinions about my own chart. Basically I was told that my thermal shift (when my temperature jumped about 7 10ths of a degree) indicated that I had ovulated, I am still getting the hang of all this. So, it looks like my period should be on the way in about 1-2 weeks.

I am learning so much about natural family planning right now and think it is so cool to be able to chart your signs of fertility and find out so much about your body. I bought the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility  to learn more about NFP and am very pleased with all the info it has provided me.

I was surprised to learn that many women become pregnant and miscarry all without knowing it because it looks just like a period and these women never even suspected pregnancy in the first place. Charting your body temperature and other fertility signs is a great way to “keep tabs” on what is going on with your body and it is a natural way to become pregnant or to prevent becoming pregnant and it is free!

Upper respiratory infections in pets- Day 1 update

March 10th, 2008

Jack’s symptoms have greatly improved and he is acting more himself today, I only added a few drops of colloidal silver to water and orally gave it to him via dropper yesterday. I did not give him more today as he seems significantly better today!

However, I have received much information from readers about the potentially harmful side effects of Colloidal Silver and I did want to disclose this information to all my readers.

I do not want to give anyone bad advice or only provide one side of the story so I feel it is appropriate to update this post to include some of the potentially harmful side effects of Colloidal Silver. (I added all this stuff to the original post also)

As with anything you should consult your doctor before hand and you should get all the facts! To help you with this I want to share some of the useful information about how Colloidal Silver, when used in excess, could harm you.

I did some reading online today and found a site that explains “The best known consequence of over consumption of silver is argyria. Most authorities state that argyria is disfiguring because of the discoloration of the skin but has no other harmful consequences. With argyria, silver is taken internally in excess and the excess is deposited in the skin, organs and other tissues. This causes the skin to turn a gray or bluish gray color. Upon exposure to strong sunlight, skin of the affected individuals can turn a dark brown or black color. This coloration is permanent. In addition to argyria, the intake of very large doses (far in excess of the amount that causes discoloration of the skin) of silver can cause neurological damage, organ damage and arteriosclerosis.”

Oh, I have a video of my sick kitty that I am posting to help other pet owners recognise an upper respiratory infection in their own pet. Some animal owners actually don’t know what an upper respiratory infection looks like! Basically lots of sneezing, maybe some snot bubbles coming out of the nose, wheezing, watery eyes you know all the symptoms of human respiratory issues would indicate a possible respiratory infection in your furry friend.

Upper respiratory infections in pets.

March 9th, 2008

While we were moving in to our new place we were nicely greeted by a neighborhood dog. She was pretty and very friendly. She had a tag on that said her name was Lady and she apparently lived across the street from us. We gave her a pat, pat and our Dixie (our dog) played with her in our yard.

Out here in the rural subdivision we live in people have the tendency to allow their animals and small children to wander about the neighborhood without supervision. I guess they must feel it is safer because we aren’t in heart of a crime ridden city but still that is no reason to let everyone run amok. That is a rant for another day though.

Anyway, we kept the friendly dog out of our house and went about our business moving in. We didn’t bother to try and take her back to her home because we had the feeling she was allowed to run the neighborhood as were most dogs in the area.

A week after we were moved in we discovered that Dixie had a strange eye discharge, her eyes we watering like crazy and the discharge was greenish. We figured she had picked up and eye infection from playing with Lady on move in day (or that one of the cats had scratched her eye). We wiped her eyes out for a week with warm washcloth and eventually the eye discharge cleared up.

Well last week Andrew (one of our cats) began sneezing like crazy and his eyes were watering, he was sluggish for a few days and then back to normal but now Jack and Mr. Guy (also cats) are sneezing and displaying the same symptoms. Except they are much worse that Andrew was. Jack can barely breathe and he seldom eats or drinks anything now.

It appears our household has contracted an upper respiratory infection. In felines this infection is highly contagious and is often treated with costly antibiotics at the veterinarian. We don’t have the money to be taking all our animals to the vet for antibiotics and would prefer not to unless they absolutely need it. Besides we prefer to do things a bit more naturally.

A few years back a coworker gave me a bottle of Colloidal Silver and explained how it is great remedy for many ailments. It’s apparently a naturally occurring mineral that when taken clears up many infections, much like an antibiotic. We have a bottle of it from that worker (she got it at a natural food store) that I have used occasionally with great results! Today I was thinking it may also benefit my sick kitties.

I set out to learn about it’s impact on animals. Obviously I am not trying to give my pets something that could harm them so I did some research on Colloidal Silver and animals.

Lots of people have used it on their animals for various aliments. It is given topically, rectally and orally depending on the problem. It is even administered to treat minor sicknesses in dogs and cats. I found a fellow blogger who has shared his success with Colloidal Silver and his pets.

It appears Colloidal Silver is successful in animals so I gave my furry friends some today to help them get over the respiratory infection. If you are looking for information on how Colloidal Silver is used for pets and/ or it’s safety check out this Google search for Colloidal Silver for pets.

Old-Fashioned Know How- Do it yourself remedies

February 12th, 2008

Good lord! The people have spoken and apparently old-Fashioned Know How- Do it yourself remedies are a favorite among my readers and fellow stumblers. A few days ago I shared a microwave cleaner I discovered and I also shared a home made recipe for spackle or wall hole patch and the comments/ hits went through the roof!

It’s surprising to me that others are also interested in my old-fashioned, simpler ways of doing things obsession and now I am not so embarrassed to share my tips. You know many people think a not so old girl sharing these discoveries/ tips is a strange thing but I am really into all this simple living stuff and I am glad you are too!

So here are a few more of my favorite bits of old fashioned know how & do it yourself remedies. Feel free to share your own in what ever way suits you or to stumble me or link to your favorite tip. Enjoy!

Want to stop smoking? I am not a smoker but my mom is and she reads this… I did find a old-fashioned recipe that is said to help you curb the urge to light up. You just drink it down with your morning tea/ coffee or juice and you will have decreased desire to smoke.

Here is the recipe: Mix 1/2 teaspoon of cream of tarter, 1/2 teaspoon of rochelle salts (from pharmacy). Or you can simply obtain some Ginseng root and chew it in the morning/ swallow the juice to curb your cravings.

Alright ladies, many of you have tried those facial masks that you apply, allow to dry and the peel off right? They remove dead skin cells, black heads and tons of other junk but are costly and sometimes hard to find so why not make you own facial mask that peels off? Also, If you enjoyed peeling dried glue off your hands as a kid this mask is for you.

All you need is 1/2 cup of apple juice, 1 packet of unflavored gelatin and a drop of essential rose oil (or another oil of your choice). Heat up the apple juice (try using a double boiler if you can, keeps the mixture from burning) and mix in the gelatin. Remove from heat when the gelatin is dissolved and allow to cool. When mixture is almost set (begins to firm) add the essential oil, mix and then apply to your face. The mask will dry, then you can peel it from your face or you can scare little kiddies with your gelatin cover shiny face. Finish by rinsing your face with warm water to remove all excess mask that you couldn’t peel off and you are done!

I have this strange spot on the carpet in my bedroom that I need to spot clean. I have tried those spray on, foamy carpet cleaning solutions and it seems they just make the stain spread. I found a recipe for a non-soapy carpet cleaning solution that only uses stuff you already have in your home!

All you need is 1 cup of white vinegar (don’t worry about the vinegary smell folks!) and 1 quart of “denatured alcohol” (or cheap vodka or rubbing alcohol). You just mix the vinegar and alcohol and then sprinkle drops of it onto the carpet or sponge it onto the bad spots. Next rinse very lightly with cool water, allow carpet to dry- soak up excess moisture with towel and then vacuum.

By the way, I love the vinegar microwave recipe I posted on sunday! All you need is one or two cups of white wine vinegar, a bowl and your nasty microwave oven. Place the uncovered bowl containing the vinegar into your microwave and turn it on full power for 5 minutes (or more if your microwave is extra nasty). When the microwave turns off simply use a dry dish towel to wipe the greasy mess off the top and sides of the microwave oven. I repeated this process twice casue mine was super dirty but it worked great! No elbow grease needed to clean the dang thing and then I poured the vinegar down the garbage disposal to keep it disinfected.

Old-Fashioned Know How- Do it yourself remedies

February 8th, 2008

I have always been interested in homemade remedies/ do it yourself remedies. Often times the remedies are cheaper, healthier and easier than conventional remedies plus they make you more self sufficient and they get you back to a simpler lifestyle.

In earlier posts I talked about how to make simple yet helpful cleaning solutions with products you already have in your home. You can remove stains, disinfect, whiten your teeth and much more without buying expensive specialized products.

In the next few weeks we are moving out of our current place and into an new one. This means massive amounts of cleaning and fixing will occur and I am trying to find simpler ways of doing this.

My first old-fashioned know how concoction I want to share with you is homemade spackle- hole patcher for your walls . Everyone hangs photos in their home, but when you move and your landlord expects you to patch the nail holes don’t go buy a product, make it yourself- from scratch! All you need is table salt, cornstarch and cold tap water. It doesn’t get easier than that folks! Mix 2 tablespoons of table salt and 2 tablespoons of cornstarch in a small bowl then slowly add 5 teaspoons of water to the mixture- it should for a paste. If it’s too runny the mixture wont work… Now just fill the holes with your mixture, allow it to dry and then sand rough spots down. If you want you can go over the spot with a wet sponge to remove the dust from sanding.

dirty-dirty-microwave.jpgIn the house we are renting they provided a microwave in addition to all the other appliances. We have the bad habit of microwaving stuff without overing it first.. Bad news, I know. Obviously we need to clean the microwave before we move and I thought it would be fun to use this simple and easy Microwave Oven Cleaner.

All you need to do is get a microwave safe bowl, add 1 1/3 cups of water and 3 tablespoons of baking soda. Put the uncovered bowl inside the microwave and run it on high for 3-5 minuites. After the 3-5 minutes is up carefully remove the bowl- It’s going to be extremely hot! and wipe the inside of the microwave with a paper towel or dish rag.

drippy-dirty-microwave.jpgThe water and baking soda will steam and cover the interior walls of the microwave then you just wipe the excess liquid and the microwave oven is clean! You can also substitute 3 tablespoons of lemon juice in place of the baking soda or you can simply microwave a bowl filled with 2 cups of white vinegar. They all will work to remove the mess that accumulates inside your microwave.

Do you have a remedy you want to share? I would love to hear them.. I am expecially looking for a way to repair/ remedy a burnt wood counter top.. :-o
