Over the weekend we traveled to Indianapolis for the last competition of the year for my students, Bands of America. It was a hectic time. Especially since we were delayed by road conditions and we spaced the time change between Evansville and Indy.
I ended up arriving just after my band was taken through the security personnel and on their way to warm up. Of course when I tried to get in to meet them I was denied because I didn’t have my staff member credentials (they were with the band in warm up).
I almost missed their performance thanks to all the combative security staff members staged all over the venue. Walking through the parking lot near my school’s buses just about got us tackled. Everyone wanted to yell at us.
Eventually we just ran to the ticket booth, paid $40 for two tickets (after we paid $10 for parking) and ran to the main entrance. We knew we weren’t going to get to meet up with the band until after they performed and I couldn’t miss their performance.
Once inside it was a huge walk to the stadium seats and I could hear my band taking the field. I was desperately trying to find my way to the stands so I could watch them perform. Every entry way was corded off though. Again I was being confronted and stopped by just about every security staffer. “Oh, you can’t go that way”, “Please come this way and wait…”
I know they were just doing their jobs but so was I. I needed to see my students last performance at the very least, they would ask how it looked. I’d already missed their warm up, I had to see them perform. The whole season had built up to this one performance, I couldn’t miss it.
So I yelled right back at people as they tried to stop me and kept on my search for the area where I would be allowed to watch the performance. I was literally jogging past security people and yelling back at them. N was trailing behind me with Everly and he just smiled and shrugged his shoulders when the staffers looked at him all shocked and butt-hurt about my response to them.
Eventually I did get my self poised at an entrance I was allowed to go through. Unfortunately they wouldn’t let me through to sit down since the band had already begun their performance. I stood in the stairwell with a family and watched my students perform.
They did a great job and I was so proud. It was nice to see the show from up in the stands too. Most of the time I only get to see the show from the field level. It’s so different from up top!
So the performance went great, I felt so bad for missing the warm up but the kids didn’t seem to upset by it since another staff member besides me was there too.
After the performance the trip was much more relaxing and enjoyable. Basically we just stayed in the hotel with Everly that night since she was sleeping.
Sunday on the way home we saw some sights, enjoyed Starbucks and Panda Express, we also stopped in a department store to do some gift shopping.
They are already playing holiday music in stores! This is the time of year when the holidays are just around the corner and everyone is being all premature about them. Decorating shouldn’t happen until AFTER thanksgiving. At least that is how we do it in our house.
Personally I love the holidays but I am not in to prematurely celebrating or decorating for them. The build up to and anticipation for them makes them that much more exciting. If you throw up decorations and play the holiday music after Halloween by the time December rolls around it’s all old news and just isn’t as fun anymore.
Of course that is just my 2 cents… What do you think?

We dont normaly put stuff up, only because Im OCD and cant stand that there are random things around the house, it just seems out of place to me… But this year we will be putting a tree up and some lights, along with some stockings! Aidan is really into it, and is somewhat old enough to get what Christmas is about!
But we will be waiting till after Thanksgiving to put any of it up.

I decorate after Thanksgiving. We always cut down out tree the weekend after T-day. That’s when the decorating, cookie baking, and all that other fun stuff begins.
Sorry you had such a hard time getting in to watch your students. I’m so happy that they did great!

I’m glad you got to see them, but really sorry for the trouble you had.
As for Christmas decorations, we don’t put any up at all unless we’re hosting the celebration. Since our house is so small, that’s not going to happen very often. Plus, it’s easier for us to travel than for the families with children.
When we did, it was the 2nd weekend in Dec., because through the 1st weekend we were always tied up with Nutcracker and then needed at least 5 days to recover.

Steven’s birthday is December 4th and we decided last year that to prevent from taking away from his birthday we will wait until the weekend after his birthday and then we will put up the decorations. We usually do it the weekend right after Thanksgiving. I will say that with all the junk going on I am very very tempted to put up the Christmas decorations right now. I LOVE Christmas. I love that people are kinder to each other during this time of year. I love that people will often go out of their way to help others. I love giving to others. Christmas decorations make me happy. Krystal always teases me about my house. Saying it looks like Christmas threw up. But in all honesty I LOVE IT! Makes me very happy. Ok…Im rambling. : )
Oh, I so know what you mean. My brother’s birthday is December 16th and we had to struggle with the whole taking away from his special day thing too.
