A white trash solution for mother & child separation…

N’s working late tonight, a football game is bumping the newscast back 30 minutes and his coworker is gonna give him a ride home. Means I am off the hook and don’t have to load Everly in the car and head out to pick him up. It also means we wont be having a sit down dinner when he gets home. I am blogging instead.

I’ve got nothing witty to share, my inspiration is gone this week probably because it’s a busy week for me.

My students have their first judged performance this weekend and it’s been a busy week preparing them. I am working five days this week as opposed to the usual three days so I am pretty maxed out and tired already.

I am pumping milk and washing diapers in preparation for Everly and N’s whole day without me. They’ll be on their own for like nine hours this time which is four more than they did the last time I was away.

They’ve done it before and it went well so I know they’ll be just fine this time. Everly will probably get fussy and confused about it all but that is manageable.

Being away from Everly is pretty strange. On one hand it’s nice to be free and to only have to worry about myself. Having her with me while I am teaching kind of limits how helpful and productive I can be with the students. I do a pretty good job making it work but I also kind of feel like I am not able to reach my full potential with the kids when I’ve got E to care for during rehearsals and performances.

On the other hand I kind of feel lost without her, like part of me is missing. Oh, the breast pain is pretty major too! Not nursing her frequently means major engorgement, ouchie! I know I should be pumping while away from her, you know to relieve the pressure and to keep my milk supply up. Finding the time to pump is kind of hard when you are hanging with high school kids outdoors the whole time, no privacy or break time! Can’t just whip out the boob and begin suctioning it, it’s sort of inappropriate.

Speaking of privacy and break time… Last night at dinner N and I were joking about parking the Winnebago outside rehearsals and performances. It’s like a portable house, perfect for the working mom!

N could sit outside in a grubby tank top drinking beer all while trash like. He could blast some sports game or some honkey tonk music and scratch himself out under the RV’s  retractable awning.

Blue smoke would billow from the RV’s generator while Everly’s electric swing is plugged in and swinging away inside the bedroom of the motor home all shielded from the sun and sounds of the marching band. It would make her napping easier!

During the students water breaks I could come over, breastfeed E or whatever and then go back to teaching while she hangs out in the RV. Things would be much easier (aka white trashy) that way! Kind of appropriate for Kentucky (where I am working) don’t you think? LOL!

wow… 9 hours is a long time to go without pumping or breastfeeding at Everly’s age.

Surely on a football field or similar area you could find a place to plug the Winnebago in an forego the generator. I am having trouble picturing N in a tank top drinking beer and scratching himself, but the sports game is not that troubling :-)

Like everything else you two have faced, you’ll come up with a workable solution to this dilemma too. I’ve got lots of faith in you.

Besides engorgement and milk supply, beware of possible plugged ducts or breast infection too. I’m sure you’ll work it out. You’re a resourceful momma! Best wishes for a great performance :)

I have a mental image of the 3 of you perched outside of the RV…its making me smile.

I wish you and students lots of luck for the performance!!

Ya, 9 hrs of not feeding or pumping is gonna hurt bad and can also affect your milk supply. Your body produces as much as needed and if you go awhile with not feeding, it stops producing as much. I love the idea of sitting in the RV :)
I haven’t been away from Riley longer then like 4 hrs and he is a yr old so I know how you feel about the seperation. We just don’t have anybody we know or trust to watch the kids here at all. It would be nice to be able to go to dinner with Adam alone but don’t think that’s going to happen anytime soon, lol
Do you have an automatic pump or a hand pump?

I would TOTALLY do the RV. Who cares what anybody else thinks? AND it would give you a place to pump.. VERY important.

This post made me laugh but honestly, having the RV there actually sounds reasonable. Heck, movie stars have their trailers on set and I think you should too! ;)

Actually that is not a bad idea. You have the RV, might as well make good use of it. And lots of people have RV’s these days, said the original Trailer Trash Queen.

Let me know if you decide to do this, and how it turns out.
