Wendy: I have been put off by the fact that the Dole containers are not recyclable. I just realized that the other day after we bought them and turned it over to see what recycling bin I should put it in and got the bad surprise. Oh well. I'll probably enjoy this batch and then move on to something that is recyclable. It would be nice if Dole changed it up though and moved to #1 or #2 plastic packaging.

My kids refuse to eat those fruit bowls, even the ones that don't have as much sugar. Crazy kids!

Also--you might try some of the protein shake powder (if you don't have a health food store in your town, you can order online) that packs a whollup of protein and calories, and you can drop it into a single serving of OJ or juice.

You are so self aware! You're the best mom for looking out for healthy stuff instead of filling up on chips and garbage because it's easier.

When my first was born and I was breastfeeding, the pediatrician told me to drink a milkshake every day. I had no problem doing this :-)

I haven't been in a grocery store for months since my husband likes to shop and I hate it... but you used to be able to buy the canned fruit in various size cans. You could put it re-usable plastic bowls with a good lid. But that would take away the non-perishable aspect.

nevermind

Those fruit bowls are a staple in my fridge. I've been eating them for awhile now. Both of my kids eat them willingly.

Eating healthy on the go is always a challenge. I do a lot of cheese sticks and crackers. When I pack my lunch for work, I don't do a traditional lunch. Since I'm on my feet and on the go, I pack things that are portable, or something that I leave at my computer and come back to later.

Good luck finding that balance!

I have never tried Dole fruit bowls, because my girls are the type that don't eat foods that are touch other foods! hahaha!

Thanks for the reminder that my 12 extra lbs of pregnancy weight are good for me while I am bfing! They just aren't good for my jeans!

Wendy,
Yes the waste does bug me! Recycling here is a major annoyance of mine. We even live in an area that doesn't do curb side recycling so we just collect and haul our stuff over to our waste management company where recycling dumpsters are located for customer drop-off.

I don't know much about plastic recycling and had no idea they can't be reused after recycling for food-grade use :-( I am glad you brought this up.

I understand convenience is a factor, but doesn't the plastic packaging and the waste concern you? Plastic recycling is limited in Evansville, but even if the bowls are locally recyclable, plastic food and beverage containers can't be recycled for food-grade use.
