A blood blister on your nipple? The joys of a nursing mom.

It’s a stormy gloomy day. I laid down to nap because I had writer block this afternoon and the weather was making me lazy. I had this post in the works but have been debating whether or not someone would read and benefit from it or if it’s just another pointless TMI post.
It is surely TMI but it’s not outright inappropriate. It’s totally the life of a new mother… Motherhood brings with it all sorts of new-found bodily issues, most of which nobody talks about. Veronica and I think this sucks!
So here I go, hopefully this will help a new mom or two. If you are experiencing this you are not alone and it is somewhat normal. If you would rather not know about the less than desirable bodily happenings of mothers skip this post.

Who would have thought stabbing a sewing needle into your already hurting nipple would seem like a good idea… If you are a breastfeeding mom whose got what seems like blood blister on your nipple you might consider it!
Right after I took this photo I got a stabbing pain in my breast.

As you can see she’s pretty much passed out and is very relaxed. The pain I felt did not coincide with any frantic movements on her part so I was confused. It sure hurt like she bit me and she’s teething but it didn’t seem like she actually bit me. My boob sure hurt though!
When she finished feeding I looked at my nipple and it looked like this:

Clearly pooling blood right? Well I googled “nipple blister” and “nipple blood blister” to find that nobody had experienced what I was going through. Can you believe it? Google DIDN’T have any answers for me. This Googlecondriac was shocked!
I came across many people discussing “milk blisters” and how little white looking things on the nipple can be a sign of a clogged milk duct. Still not quite what was going on with me…
That night in the tub I resorted to trying to pop the blood blister. I mean if I’ve got one anywhere else on my body the fastest way to relief is to relieve the pressure… So I grabbed a needle and broke the skin.
It didn’t hurt that bad actually and once I got the pooling blood out I noticed there was a hard buildup in there… A clogging if you will. A few good squeezes later and some peroxide made it good as new and feeling oh, so much better.
The next day I asked around on twitter and emailed a blogger buddy to find out I wasn’t a total freak of nature with a nipple blood blister. I was told “treatment is, (wait for it)… damp heat and a sterile needle & squeeze it out.” Yay!
I mean I never imagined I would choose to stab my nipple but that’s life right? I really shouldn’t be surprised since I also had to clip the tail from my stitches that was stabbing my lady parts a few days following my 4th degree tear repair work.
There is no modesty or shame after child birth folks, NONE!! At least not for me ;-P

I didn't apply ointment but my midwife did recommend to do so...i was fine after and breastfed within 1-2hours....and my blood blister was probably 4x the size of the one in the picture.
@janne Great, thank you so much. Any idea what ointment she recommended? Thank goodness for this blog.
Thanks for the help. How soon can u breastfeed after popping the blister? Did anyone apply An ointment?
Thank you for the advice! I've had one for a few days and it's been SOO painful, tried manually expressing to let it heal and got so sick of that that I let her nurse and the pain was terrible! (mine looks way worse than your picture even)...so I took the advice with the needle, feeling better already, though it was hard to do...i iced it first to numb it and make the needle easier to use. Thanks again.
I just took your advice and put a warm, damp washcloth on my nipple for several minutes, cleaned a safety pin in alcohol, and popped my blood blister. After several squeezes I think pulled out all the thick, chunky stuff that was in there. Feeling MUCH better!!!! Thanks so much for the advice!!!!!!!
I am so happy you posted this. This is the exact same thing that happened to me yesterday and I have been trying to find some info on it with Google to no avail. They talked about white milk blisters but I couldn't find anything on what I had. I haven't popped them yet. I have three. I will tonight. It's so painful! Do you know why they appeared? What did you find out. Thank you so much for your post. Jacqui
Jacqui,
Thanks for the comment and I am sorry about your pain. I know how terrible those things feel and popping them will totally do the trick. Best I can gather they are caused in the same way milk blisters appear; from nursing friction or latch issues.
For me angling baby's chin & latch more upward at an angle (as opposed to angling level with the nipple/ areola) helped to prevent future pain and blisters.
Hope this helps you and that the pain subsides. If it doesn't get in touch with a lactation consultant that can physically show you some tips and tricks for correcting latch. :)
This was a wonderful find for me after googling, 'I have a blood blister on my nippe'. I felt very comforted knowing that you wrote exactly what I was going thru, but couldn't find an answer! Ok, I popped mine and am moving forward with the healing process! Thank you for writing about your experience!! Happy Trails!
Thank you, thank you, thank you so much. I had one of these. Thought the pain was thrush and have been treating it since yesterday, but then the blister got bigger and today I popped it and it's such a relief! I have been googling to find any information and this was the only info I could find. Looking forward to some pain free feeding later on :-)
Thank you so much!! I am a new mom and having this problem... how long did you wait before breastfeeding again? Did you pump in between or anything??
I didn't stop breastfeeding at all. After popping it I nursed her just fine the next morning. It's better than risking milk supply issues as a result of not feeding her on that side or whatever. If you feel better you can pump that side for a bit till the pain is gone.
I think I have this but I'm only 7 months pregnant. It's tiny. It looks like a grain of sand. But it hurts when fabric brushes over it. Ugh! Next prenatal not for another 2 weeks :(
You can get them while pregnant too! Try popping or squeezing it. Gotta remove the blockage so it can heal.
Uggg.... I was hoping the internet wouldn't tell me that I have to pop it! I ran into the same problem of not finding the same exact thing on Google, until I came across your blog that is.
Isn't breastfeeding a hoot? The things mommies go through for their babies.

Talina - you are one brave chic to have popped that blood blister. I was clenching my teeth as I read your post. Ouchie!! A good friend is due to have her first baby soon and she was expressing to me her embarassment and modesty over having a baby in front of her husband and the hospital staff. I told her that will all go out the window the minute she's in labor and feeling contractions. I said the nurses don't care what your va-jay-jay looks like, it doesn't even look the same as in day-to-day life! LOL
Every time you mention that '4th degree tear' I get a case of butt pucker in sympathy. Just thought you'd like to know that men can be sympathetic, as well.

I had a couple of blood blisters thanks to Seth...as well as a few boobie hickies. The things we go through for our children :) And, one mom to another, there is never a thing as TMI.

Ouch, that looks painful!
And a million OUCHES for every time you mention your 4th degree tear... It make my vag and ass hurt sooo bad whenever I think of you going thru that.
I love your TMI post, I should write one on child birth? I had no idea that you were aspose to bleed for 4-6 weeks post baby. The day after I had Aidan I was all "Um, Im still bleeding?" then nurse look at me VERY confused and said, "Oh Honey, you will for a few weeks". I could have up and bitch slapped her, but after 3 hours of hard core pushing the day before, I was to sore to do so.
Glad to see you are doing better with your nipple!
.-= Krystal McCarthy´s last blog ..I WON! =-.
Yep, I've had one before. It's like a bad pimple, it actually hurts less to pop it with a needle than it does to leave it be.

No modesty after childbirth... exactly! Before trying to breastfeed, how many women asked their mothers (or others) to look at their breasts? (OK, I realize some women display their breasts for other reasons... )
Until I had a massive post-partum infection which killed milk production, my mother was my breastfeeding coach and things were going quite well. (My tear was not fixed as competently as yours was. I delivered at least 3 weeks late, which resulted in my regular OB/GYN being on vacation. I heard him calling the on-call OB a quack and worse after my doc examined me.)
Today, my pregnancy would probably not be allowed to continue that far. But, considering the times... it was. By standard measurements, all my babies were somewhere between 2 and 4 weeks overdue. This was rough on me physically because none of them were born "cone-headed" because they really didn't have a "soft spot" that could be manipulated.
After having two babies under general anesthesia with the resulting pain of tears, when my third child was born with a spinal and I was awake - there was argument over whether I should push before an episiotomy was performed. I refused to push... as difficult as that was... I kept asking about the episiotomy.
I also feel for mothers who need a c-section because the pain of recovering from the surgery makes it difficult for them to hold their babies in a natural position.
I suppose what I want to say here is that you are a lucky woman, and Everly is a lucky baby. You two have been able to experience the best of childbirth and infancy... as far as I can tell.
Medically, times have changed for the better. I might have another sister today had medicine been at at different stage... it would have discerned that a discharge of ambiotic fluid without signs of labor meant an immediate c-section was needed...
While I do not disparage your natural birth experience, I must acknowledge that at least one of my babies might not have survived, and that without doubt, one of grandchildren would not have survived.
Every birth is a miracle in some respect.
